What Exactly is Maldives Emergency 2018
Maldives declared a 15- day state of emergency
Why??
Maldives president Mohd. Yameen came into power in 2013 after defeating previous president Mohammad Nasheed. Since his presidency began, he has been jailing almost all the political leaders of oppositions. Previous president was also arrested in 2015 on the charges of terrorism and was jailed for 13 years after which he was sent to Sri Lanka on exile.
Supreme Court of Maldives last week ordered to release all the political prisoners including the previous president. Releasing all the political prisoners will result in filling all the parliament's sacked seats which will ultimately lead to problems for current ruling party.
Seeing all this the president declared the state of emergency on 04-February-2018.
After Declaring Emergency
After declaring emergency, all the powers of detaining any person without any evidence goes to the President of Maldives. He ordered the arrest of Supreme Court judges including Chief Justice of Maldives. This has resulted in the nationwide protests and arresting many other political leaders including current president Mohammad Yameen's estranged half-brother who was president for 30 years.
Currently Maldives is witnessing nationwide protests and unrest all over the country.
What's Next?
Former President Mohd. Nasheed has requested the help from India and has said to "act swiftly" in the current state of crisis.
China however has declined any help and has requested Maldives to sort things out within themselves since it is a complete personal matter.
US on the other hand said, "America stands with the people of Maldives and the Maldivian government and military must respect the rule of law, freedom of expression and democratic institutions. The world is watching"
Currently Maldives remains in the state of Emergency and crisis.
